Dear readers, How are you? How is it where you live?

Here in Japan, the most recent state of emergency has been lifted.

There are still restrictions in some places, but life is returning to normal. For the first time in a while, I heard a stranger getting drunk and having a casual conversation. I was finally able to eat out in the evening with a drink by my side.

When I look at the streets of the city, it feels like the daily life from before Corona is gradually returning.

But, from now on, it seems like unprecedented things can happen again. Though things are still hard, I’m doing my best to make it back to my ordinary life after around two years away from it. I hope that people will still be careful with this unpredictable virus.

I hope that you and I will return to a “normal life” where we can travel, eat out, and meet friends and new people.

Please do your best, valuing yourself and your surroundings as much as possible. Please love yourself.

Do any of you want to travel to Japan once this situation has settled down? Let’s say you can. If so, what do you want to do to enhance your trip?

Visiting a beautiful garden? Gourmet? shopping? Taking a stroll? Want to talk to locals and make friends? I’m sure you want to do all of that!

Any new ideas? As a Japanese person, I would like to make just such a proposal.

If you’re lucky, maybe you can find a Japanese craftsman and respectfully watch them perform their craft.

Even simply paying attention to their face can be a wonderful experience, seeing their focus and skill.

Sushi craftsman, kitchen knife craftsman, doll craftsman, kimono masters, etc.

I think Japanese craftsman’s face is beautiful, even though I don’t know why. Maybe, because they are respected.

There may be craftsmen who aren’t wonderful to watch, but I’ve never seen or met anyone who isn’t. I don’t think the original features have much to do with it. I think it’s different from the beauty of actors and actresses. Their mastery is its own beauty.

What do you think when you hear the word “craftsman”?

What I think of is the face of a master of the road. It is a sincere face of the master craftsmen who is ready for work.

We can look at kimono masters for reference. When I was young I studied wearing kimono, and I had the opportunity to interact with people who do the weaving, dyeing, and various other people involved in the craft in each region.

Some of the techniques were said to be too difficult to remember or pass down.

When you look at those people, please please be careful not to disturb them, especially if they’re working, and be discreet so that you don’t interfere with their important work.

I believe some of them feel like they are sacrificing something important in their lives.

Anyway, if you come to Japan and have a chance to see a true craftsman, you will surely think that I am right. And be careful to honor their work, don’t get in the way, and give them the respect they deserve.

I’m happy that there are people who are interested in Japan.

Let’s respect each other’s country and life. Then you will surely have the best and most enjoyable trips and encounters.
