Japanese food【Reasons why I recommend Tempura】

Dear followers and readers, how are you? I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.

I was a writer who mainly wrote reports on food for about four and a half years. Sometimes I am asked by foreigners,

“What is your favorite(recommended) Japanese food?”

I can be asked.

Actually, when I am asked that question, I am at a loss.

The reason is that what I think is delicious may differ from what you might think is delicious.

It’s common for different countries and regions to have different tastes, and if the food is too strange to them, some people may not be able to eat it at all.

Vegetarians, vegans, and even some foods you can’t eat for religious reasons can further complicate matters.

However, one of the dishes I would like to suggest is Tempura(天ぷら). It’s a Japanese dish, battered and deep-fried the ingredients.

Eat freshly fried with Japanese sauce or salt. You can eat it at the table, but there are many Tempura restaurants where it is fried right in front of you at the counter.

Originally, deep frying is simple yet excellent cooking method, and on top of that, Japanese craftsmen know meticulous techniques and considerations, so I’m sure it’s worth a try.

Charles Chaplin ate…/Tempra and Portugal

When Charles Chaplin came to Japan, he ate 30 shrimp Tempuras at one time (Reference: Japanese wikipedia of チャールズ・チャップリン Charles Chaplin).

Also, I think it’s a dish that is easy for foreigners.

Because it is said that this dish came from Portugal.

Also, it is convenient in that it is relatively easy to understand what kind of ingredients you put in your mouth.

In Japan, there is a female manga artist named Rinko Nagami(流水りんこ) who married an Indian man and illustrates her multicultural life in Japan and her time in India.

In her manga work, there is a scene in which struggles to entertain guests from overseas, mainly from India, especially at her home whether for religious reasons or different tastes.

But what was popular was the Tempura which was fried right in front of the guests.

It was a luxury to be able to eat freshly-fried food, and that it was popular because it allowed you to know what ingredients you were going to put in your mouth.

Some specialty restaurants of Tempra, serve dishes as Tempura appetizers, like sashimi,  and other Japanese cuisines presented on beautiful Japanese plates. It can be good experience for you.

A secret and shrimp Tempura

Finally, let me tell you a secret. I also love shrimp Tempura, which Chaplin also liked, but the surprisingly simple and delicious way to eat it is to eat it freshly fried with salt mixed with curry powder.

This is really simple, but surprisingly delicious. Long time ago, I was introduced to it by a relative who lives in an upscale residential area in Tokyo, but I have never seen it being done at a restaurant before.

Curry powder is strong, so it might disturb the balance of other Japanese cuisines at the restaurant. Please try it elsewhere, for example at your home, if you like.
