❚ A Japanese man
Dear followers and readers, how are you? I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.
Today, let me tell you about a Japanese man.
It’s about my brother. He is a very kind person, a hard worker, and although he might have a lot to say, he only speaks up when it’s important.
However, after the death of our mother, I learned that he could hardly do any household chores.
As I wrote about before, he can’t even add bath salt to the bath by himself. Japanese baths generally have a washing area and a bathtub with a bath cover.
“Take your time (please put the bath salt by yourself)”
I said, but later I found that he did not unless I did it.
He couldn’t put the hot water in the bathtub by himself. He wouldn’t get angry if there was no hot water, but he will take a shower and just go home. I couldn’t stand it and asked him to do it himself,
“If you can’t do it, you don’t have to do it today.”
This is how he thought about things.
“You think it’s not your job, don’t you?”
Even if I said so, he’s just mumbled something.
One time after I got very angry, he filled up the bathtub with hot water once, but to my surprised he closed the door tightly and poured hot water. He probably had never filled the bathtub with hot water before.
That’s one of the reason why I runned away from home for a while, but after that he started doing laundry for me (he seems to have some experience doing laundry).
However, the other day, when I asked him to bring me a ladle because I cooked Nabe cuisine (Japanese hot pot dish) and had to serve it, he brought me a net for deep frying net seriously, which surprised me yet again. I asked him that maybe he had never cooked before, and he admitted.
But he is busy. He does most of the procedures for inheritance. His demeanor in his conversations with the lawyers was so wonderful the firm that I admired him and made me glad I had a brother.
Once, when I saw him celebrating my birthday with all of his might and effect to the point of exhaustion and he even started dozing off. I thought that I would do the laundry and do as much of the housework as possible, as a way to share my gratitude for his genuine effort.
Yesterday was even more surprising. When I said I was sick and couldn’t cook dinner, he went shopping for me at a convenience store and warmed up a frozen pizza in the microwave, and served it to me!
I was very surprised. It was his first time doing something like that. Even though it was not oven-baked pizza (maybe he can not do that), it was still delicious and I appreciated his effort.
No matter what it looked like, it brings me great happiest when peaple’s kind.
I don’t want to increase discrimination against women in Japan, but he’s so busy right now that he doesn’t have time. Also, he’s my brother. It is for other person to decide what he should do in the future regarding the division of household chores.
He seems to be more reserved and untalkative, but he watches carefully, and when he needs to say something, he speaks up and often gives very kind words. Despite his flaws, he is still such a great brother to have.
Helpful feedback is always welcome!
