❚International and open-minded city, about 30 minutes from Shibuya
Dear followers and readers, how are you? I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.
It’s been three months since I rented an apartment in Yokohama(横浜). I have a thought about it.
Yokohama is a fashionable port town near Tokyo, and it takes about 30 minutes by train from Shibuya Station to Yokohama Station.
It is said that even some rich people choose to live in Yokohama instead of Tokyo.
Perhaps, this city has the advantage of being international and open-minded for Japan, as its reputation suggests. Perhaps, in terms of internationality, some people think it can be above Tokyo.
This town has a former foreign settlement and Japan’s largest Chinatown.

Japanese, Chinese, and westerner live in my apartment.
Above all, people don’t interfere much with others. This is a major feature of the city, I heard.
There are a lot of tourists especially on weekends, but when I go to a foreign restaurant, including Chinese, and have a meal, I hear some people asking interfered questions about their nationality, background and roots, even though they seem to be meeting for the first time.
It seems that it’s people not from here, including Tokyo.
I’m still a stranger too, but when I entered a restaurant that seemed to be run by a foreigner in the neighborhood,
“Recently, I moved nearby for some reason.”
When I said that, they just say, “Oh, please come again soon.”
I am from country and at first it seemed quite distant for me, but now I follow their way and try not to ask to others easily.
Japan is very hot now. However, perhaps because it is a port town, Yokohama is relatively cool.
Sometimes I am homesick, and at the same time, I think it is one of its attractions.
