┃Are Samurai happy?
There is a famous age-old saying from an old samurai: “Bushido is the way of death.” It can be interpreted in many different ways, but I have told my foreigner friends, “I found the way of Samurai life is death.” If living as a Samurai is death, then where is the joy of their lives? Is it in serving their master as a Samurai? At first glance, it sounds like a contradiction, but the person who wrote this is he father of the work “Hagakure(葉隠)” is where this is quoted from.
As I was reading the modern translation, I thought, I can’t believe there was such a person, but he really loved his life as a Samurai.
What he says ranges from love for your master (true love) to how to be considerate of those below you, and is very real and interesting. There is a translation, so please read it.
Yukio Mishima’s “Introduction to Hagakure” is also interesting.
In my opinion, his words are sometimes more radical, but strangely enough, they are filled with the joy of living. The joy of living as a Samurai
