I love the art of kimono and have a first-class dressing qualification.
Japanese people don’t normally wear Kimono anymore, and I find they’re very hard to wear, so to put them on I needed to go to a special school to study and practice for months.
I got that qualification a long time ago, and for now I can only dress myself.
When I look at kimono, I think about how beautiful they are, whether it’s my own, someone’s, the ones I see in a shop window, or even in a museum, and I get absorbed in the moment.
Kimono is basically worn with strings and belts, though it seems that skilled people can wear it with just strings.
If I hold down the points without tightening the key points of my body, It’s not painful.
When I was studying to qualify for dressing, I thought about the role of skill in wearing kimono.
If you wear the kimono that suits you and wear it correctly, the kimono is neither painful nor impractical.
❚ Kimono is a good teacher
I was able to discover a new self through learning the art of Kimono. When you wear a kimono, Japanese people look beautiful. It hides the person’s shortcomings and highlights their strengths.
That could be said of traditional outfits from around the world. When I go to other countries in Asia, I try on the traditional looks of those countries as much as possible and take commemorative photos.
It’s a lot of fun to look good in the dress of other countries, but there can be problems… When I wore a cheongsam, it looked pretty good, but I was surprised that my neck didn’t look thin. I had never noticed it before.
Kimono are kinder to me. I realized that kimono is a good teacher which teaches me about Japanese culture and how to make me look my best.
Clothing changes how people act and move. When you wear a kimono, your natural gestures are more graceful and feminine. The kimono will teach you that if you do this, you will be more beautiful in your own way.
Would you like to wear a kimono too? In Japan there are lots of shops that rent kimono for guests to walk around in, and depending on the store, men can also cosplay as geisha!
