❚ I went to Awaji Island the other day
Dear followers and readers, how are you? I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.
I went to Awaji Island (淡路島) the other day. I love traveling and have traveled almost all over Japan, but this is the first time that I’ve been to Awaji Island.
There are various routes, but we took a bus from Kobe (神戸).
It is accessible through a long driving bridge. It takes about an hour and half to get there.
I could see the Seto Inland Sea. It was really beautiful.
Japan is an island country surrounded by the sea. Each sea has its own personal charm.
For example, the Sea of Japan is a vast open sea that extends to the continent, so the sea can be rough sometimes, and even looking at it can be intimidating, yet beautiful. I sometimes think to myself, “Even though I can’t see it from here with my own eyes, there’s a continent and foreign countries on the other side.”
On the other hand, Ise Bay, which is close to where I grew up, is an inland sea too, so it is relatively calm. To me, it’s like the ocean is wrapped up with two arms of a guardian woman. But it’s connected to the outside sea, so sometimes finless porpoises come here. In the past.
❚ The Seto Inland Sea was relatively calm and beautiful
The Seto Inland Sea (瀬戸内海) was relatively calm and beautiful.
Once, after my mother had recovered from her illness, the two of us went on our first cruise trip from Kobe to Busan in South Korea. I had a lot of fun. The Seto Inland Sea was calm and I could clearly see the adjacent shoreline from the ship.
The next day was a rough day that day, and I still remember the shaking that shook me as we departed from Shimonoseki for the open ocean.
I wondered to myself how the outside could be both so beautiful yet rough.
The Seto Inland Sea, which I hadn’t seen in a long time, but it was as beautiful as ever.
When I saw the tiny ripples, my heart became calm, and I felt that time flows slower than usual. It just gives me a unique sense of happiness.
Every sea has its own charm, but I think the Seto Inland Sea can be 2nd best to be my most loved.
The best is maybe the Mediterranean. I went there a while ago. It is my personal opinion, I felt like it’s a bit similar.
At the last stop of the bus, we visited Awaji Puppet Theatre(淡路人形座)of AWAJI NINGYO JORURI (淡路人形浄瑠璃 AWAJI NINGYÔ JÔRURI).
This place was awarded two stars in the French guidebook of Michelin Green.
Michelin is famous for its red gourmet guidebooks but also publishes green travel guidebooks.
It’s a luxurious theater, and I was excited to experience this gorgeous feeling.
It’s been a long time since I watched a play. It reminded me of the glamor of the theater.
It was my first time seeing AWAJI NINGYO JORURI, but it was very interesting.
Here is intersting YouTube about them.

If I think about it, for a long time, due to the covid pandemic, YouTube, and having been immersed in the world of CG, which is interesting too, but I am deeply moved as I remember that there is something so unique about theaters.
It is on an island, and the fish is delicious. We all ate cheap yet delicious Kaisendon (海鮮丼), bought fresh ingredients, and overall it was a very satisfying trip.
