【On the Affinity Between a Beautiful British Etiquette Expert and Japan】Beautiful stories from far away From Japan

2026-03-27 | TOSHI

Hello, I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.

I was wondering what to write about today, and I thought I’d write about a British etiquette expert I follow.

Do you know William Hanson from the UK?

He’s a famous British etiquette and manners expert.

He teaches a wide range of people proper manners and etiquette in the modern age. Besides appearing on television and writing columns, he’s also popular as the host of the podcast “Help I Sexted My Boss,” where he explains traditional manners with a touch of humor. He’s really successful!

I enjoy watching videos of him speaking.

Sometimes I don’t understand everything in English, but his posture, gestures, and words are so beautiful, elegant, and refreshing.

I wish I could be like that…

Actually, my husband once gave me a book on manners as a gift. He says he likes people who are well-mannered.

When we first started dating, I tried to get on the Tokyo subway before everyone else had gotten off, and my husband got angry at me.

Even William says that’s not good.

Below is “How to get guests who overstay their welcome to leave.” It’s short and easy to watch.

It’s kind of similar to the story about bubuzuke in Kyoto,Japan.

If someone asks, “Would you like some bubuzuke (rice with tea poured over it)?”

it means, “Please leave.”

Regarding Kyoto, there’s also the story that if someone says,

“That’s a nice watch you’re wearing,”

it means, “Look at your watch,” and also means, “You’re going on too long.”

I have experienced it in person.

I once felt embarrassed because I didn’t know that

“Yes, but the phone connection is poor” meant “No.”

Perhaps this kind of communication is good because, once you get used to it, it prevents hurt feelings. It might also be exclusive, but I think it’s both.

Are there any similarities between Kyoto, or rather, Japan and England? They’re both island nations, after all.

I love William. There don’t seem to be any books translated into Japanese yet, but when I want to be soothed or improve myself, I like to watch him.
