【What Japanese people do when cherry blossoms bloom?】Beautiful stories from far away From Japan

2022-03-12 | TOSHI

The weeping plums in full bloom, each flower is like a jewel

Dear followers, readers, how are you? I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.

Where I’m from, plum trees are in full bloom now, and when I see the weeping plums in full bloom, each flower is like a jewel, and the whole tree is like an elegant and gorgeous work of art made from them. It makes me feel really happy.

There are still cold days, but on warm days when the wind is comfortable, the sun feels like it soaks into my skin. It’s already spring according to the calendar.

“Obon” season/Return of ancestors【Beautiful stories from far away From Japan】

Spring vegetables are now on sale

Spring vegetables are now on sale. It’s a perfect time to make one of my favorite foods; Tempura!

It’s seasonal, so it’s good for your health, it’s light, and it has a depth that will surprise you even if you chew it.  It’s perfect as a snack with beer.

As I said last time when I talked about cherry blossoms, I liked the cool season the most. I don’t like sun tanning, and when I went abroad, I could not understand when I see people sunbathing in some countries.

However, after Corona, I have been looking forward to the arrival of spring, and I was moved to see blooming flowers, and the beautiful vegetables with gentle colors. I don’t know the reason. But probably because I feel their vitality.

It’s maybe the first time in my life, now I wonder: why not put on sunscreen and sunbathe?

I went to a nearby plum grove, enjoyed various cherry blossoms and flowers, and try new dishes with spring ingredients. Actually, I may feel depressed, but I want to do what I can and enjoy the present as much as possible.

HANAMI(花見)

Nowadays, because of the time we’re living in, we don’t have many chances to get together in Japan, but when we are less worried about Corona, I would like to see the cherry blossoms, HANAMI(花見).

Have you heard of Hanami? HANAMI literally means seeing flowers, but in Japan, in principle, it means seeing cherry blossoms.

The time when the cherry blossoms bloom often overlaps with when students start at a new school, the beginning of a new career, and other big life changes.

Really though, Japanese people don’t need a reason to go out and watch the flowers with fun drinks and great food.

At that time, I like to see cherry blossoms, but I also like to take the chance to do some people-watching.

It’s really interesting!! Sometimes there are people who put up tents in the park and sit inside, where they can hardly see the cherry blossoms. Others drink alcohol and chat loudly.

When it happens to be cold and the ground is uncomfortable, some people watch cherry blossoms even when standing around.

When I was a kid, some people even played karaoke, not caring if they were noisy. Maybe it’s no good these days.

Every gathering is an exaggeration to say that it is their true nature, but it is profound because there are people who show their individuality and watch the cherry blossoms in ways that I can’t imagine.

Now, such gatherings are discouraged, but there are many wonderful cherry blossoms in my city, so I want to see the cherry blossoms again and again this year, whether with my close friends or by muself while shopping…

Almost all Japanese people who see the cherry blossoms look happy, with a smile that expresses each person’s individuality and feelings. Those smiles are also flowers.

During that time, various wonderful flowers will bloom around the cherry blossoms and will be piled up as memories.

Unfortunately, cherry blossoms, like Somei-Yoshino are flowers that disperse in a relatively short time when they bloom, and although there are differences in the timing of blooming in the north and south, there are also subtle differences depending on the year. If you can see the cherry blossoms in full bloom on a fixed trip to Japan, you can be said that you are lucky.

However, if you come to Japan and the cherry blossoms are in bloom, look at the face of the person who sees them. I’m sure you know what I mean.
