I haven’t been on a proper trip for almost five years since the start of COVID-19. I haven’t been abroad at all.
It seems like a distant memory that I used to go to Taiwan and Korea on weekends.
In the meantime, I moved to Tokyo, and my living situation has changed a lot.
I thought that Tokyo has everything, and traveling can be tiring, so maybe I don’t need to go anywhere anymore, and that’s when I read this manga.

The title itself is a powerful word.
The title does the book justice; it’s about a Japanese woman who goes alone to the Indian Himalayas and rides a motorbike.
“There are mountain passes over 5000 meters above sea level. If I fall, I’ll probably get more than just an injury. I lost 9kg due to altitude sickness and diarrhea that lasted for three weeks.”
This book starts with a shocking opening, and I was drawn in from the beginning.
Haruka, a company worker with mental health issues, goes on a journey to find herself again.
What is the meaning of her going on a journey that could be said to be “risking her life” while her health deteriorates significantly in India?…Even though I have such questions, I am captivated by the author’s worlds.
The author is good at both painting and photography. At first, I was frightened by the story of diarrhea in India, but the carefully drawn world was very comfortable, and I gradually remembered the sense of freedom I felt in a foreign country.
When I was young, I wanted to ride a motorcycle. My parents strongly opposed it because I was a woman, so I gave up, but I feel like my dream has come true and I’m riding alone in the wilderness. What a wonderful book.
There are two best things about this book.
“1. Why travel when your everyday life will be waiting for you when you return? The new experience will allow you to grow.”
“2. Why and how do you live your life?”
I think it even describes the answers to these fundamental questions.
I think the author encountered these answer on this journey to the brink of death.
That’s what I think.
This is just my opinion, but I now believe that people go on journies to see the lives of others in order to find their own way of life. And that’s just fine.
