Amazing encouragement coming from a South American

Different cultures are often incredibly wonderful, and sometimes you’ll expereince them from unexpected places, and sometimes they can help you, even when you didn’t know that you needed that help.

This time for me it was the latter. I received tremendous encouragement from a man from South America.

I’m currently taking dance lessons from a South American instructor. It was a rare dance that I hadn’t yet seen for a quarter of a century, when I was living in a rural area. I never would have never thought I’d be able to learn it in Japan so authentically and in my native language.

There are still some things I’m not used to about living in a city such as Tokyo, but I’m deeply convinced that Tokyo is a really good place for having such rich cultural experiences!

My teacher’s native language is Spanish, so I started learning it little by little.

Last time, when I went to class when I was feeling a bit unwell, the teacher asked me, “How are you doing?” and I answered, “So so.”

“Why so-so?”

I was a little surprised when replied back to me.

“Well, a certain plan just went awry…it was unsuccessful…”

I replied with a slight smile, and the teacher said in a casual tone,

“But you’re still alive! If that plan doesn’t work, why don’t you try another plan?”

I was inwardly surprised and awkstruck.

It’s amazing how non-Japanese people can so casually say, “But, you’re still alive!” in such a wonderful way of encouraging others. When someone says that to me, it’s hard to know how respond.

At that time, I was actually hungry and learning the content of the lesson was difficult for me for the first time, so I found the lesson to be a little tough, which is unusual, but I don’t think I’ll ever forget what I was told that day.

His home country is really far away. I found it interesting that someone from the other side of the earth who was married with a successful career would have a different outlook on life.
