【Sumo wrestlers take over London!?】Beautiful stories from far away From Japan

■Japanese sumo wrestlers are popular in London

Japanese sumo wrestlers are popular in London.

The first London sumo performance in 34 years is taking place at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Before the performance, the sumo wrestlers toured the city, but even Londoners were surprised when these giants, clad in kimonos and topknots, suddenly appeared!

They were so popular that wherever they went, they were surrounded by locals who wanted to take photos with them and chat with them.

“So cool!”
“It’s like I’m dreaming!”
“Lovely!”

“Hey, big guy over there! How much do you weigh?”
“150kg.”

I’ve linked some footage from a certain TV show. Please take a look if you’d like.

Both of them are Yokozuna (the highest-ranking sumo wrestlers).

They seem to be friends, as one of them was feeding the other a hot dog he bought on the street,

saying, “Daiki! (the other’s name) This is crazy, try this! Open your mouth!”.

The two of them sharing it, talking about how delicious it was, made the news.

Yokozuna are sumo wrestlers who have reached the highest ranks, but in fact, both of them are only around 25 years old.
As young men, they must have enjoyed sightseeing in London and being cheered on by the crowd.

By the way, the yokozuna that was feeding the hotdog to his friend is named Hosyoryu(豊昇龍).

He is Mongolian and his uncle is also a famous yokozuna (his uncle’s name is Asashoryu, and of course I remember him).
The world of sumo wrestling is tough, and many young Japanese people today give up, so recently there have been many foreigners joining the ranks.

The other yokozuna is Onosato(大の里). He is Japanese, but at 192 cm tall, he is attracting attention as the first good Japanese yokozuna in a long time.

Sumo is not just a martial art; it also doubles as a religious ritual, and has a long history.

It makes me want to watch sumo again

Personally, sumo was popular when I was young, but some people got involved in scandals, and the image of it being “too harsh for today’s times” and “related to violent incidents” grew stronger, so I was not very interested in it anymore.

In Tokyo, I would occasionally see sumo wrestlers on the streets, but they were always dressed very lightly, even when it was cold out, and I worried that they might be suffering.

This time, seeing the sumo wrestlers in flashy kimonos and popular with Londoners made me think “I’m suprised to see sumo wrestlers smile, too, and how cute they are.”

It makes me want to watch sumo again.

They say if you watch a live tournament in a stadium, you will have a lot of fun and you might even get covered in sand.

I don’t like sad stories. The old Japanese world was often characterized by strict hierarchical relationships, but I really dislike that too.

Both geisha and sumo wrestlers have their own unique charms, so I hope that young people will be told, “I hear you can make a lot of money if you become a geisha or sumo wrestler!” and that this will lead them to taking up the profession, but I guess that’s impossible. Japan’s old world is conservative.

The photo shows a restaurant I went to in Tokyo where you can eat sumo wrestler food (called chanko nabe). It had even been featured in the Michelin Guidebook.

The name of the restaurant is 「ちゃんこ川﨑」.

It’s located in Ryōgoku, the town where the sumo stadium is located.

The food was delicious and the service was great.

They’re also scheduled to perform in Paris in June next year.

If the sumo wrestlers, who usually train rigorously, are so happy, I hope they’ll take better care of them so they can as happy as they were in London.
