【The Tatami mats】How to create a Japanese corner easily

Dear followers and readers, how are you, ? I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman.

I am very great today! Unexpectedly! Yesterday, I went to learn martial arts, had a light dinner (just natto 納豆・fermented soybeans, sweet potato, and salad), got a good night’s rest, and woke up at 5:30 AM. I decided to eat something delicious for today!

Yokohama, a stylish and international port city in Japan

In fact, until recently, I was terribly homesick.

I had a misfortune happen back home and moved to Tokyo area. I came to a city which called Yokohama (横浜), a stylish and international port city in Japan. It also has a relatively rich history.

横浜中華街(カンフー体験)

There is also the largest Chinatown in all of Japan, and it might be more international than even Tokyo, at least for Japan.

Some people chose this town to live even they are very rich, not Tokyo.

My hometown is a more conservative city, although it has many positive aspects. So when I thought about moving to the suburbs of Tokyo, I considered Yokohama due to its multiracial atmosphere.

It’s like living in an area with many foreigners and traveling or studying abroad! There are many language schools, so I’m going to be fluent in many languages!

I became very homesick, but…

However, as everyone has had such an experience, I became very homesick after a while, and at one point I could not eat any of the foreign foods that I loved so much.
I couldn’t cook for myself, so I lost weight and had a lot of trouble. My parents’ house is far away, and the environment at my parents’ house has changed, so it doesn’t get better even if I go home.

But in some unexpected way, almost overnight, I felt amazingly better myself. What do you think it is from? I put tatami mats in my new apartment.

Usually, since the size of each tatami mat is fixed, it only fits perfectly if it is a traditional Japanese-style room.

However, I learned that there are convenient and stylish tatami mats that are cut into small squares and can be combined freely to create a Japanese corner easily, even in a Western-style room.

I like the convenience of my own apartment, but when I forced myself to sleep in my current room, which had nothing, not even any carpet, I felt like I was sleeping on the street, and I couldn’t get rid of my fatigue.

However, I was surprisingly revitalized when I created a Japanese corner with a tatami mat, placed a lamp with gentle light at my feet, and slept on a futon.

The smell of new tatami mats! Tatami mats are made of rush and etc. are said rush purify the air.

There is also an unscrupulous old saying that “the newer the wife and the tatami, the better.”

The wind from the air conditioner hits the tatami mats, and my room smells good.
The scent is a little different from forests.
Is it a refreshing grassy scent, that is a little bit like the perfume “Vent Vert”, green wind.

I can’t believe this makes me so happy and at peace. Also, could it have been a kind of aromatherapy? Overnight I remarkably recovered, and when I woke up and looked outside, I realized I was in such a diverse and wonderful place.

Then I went a famous and expensive Chinese restaurant, but I could ate quite delicious nutrient-rich Chinese style ramen and it was a best price, only for 850 yen, because it was lunch.

Do you know that? Remember!! In Japan, even high-end restaurants often serve lunch at abargain price completely different from dinner due to factors like attracting customers.
After that, I had some Taiwanese sweet tapioca milk tea at different friendly cafe. I was happy.

You may think this might be the case, but it is difficult for people themselves to understand why they are happy, why they are hurt, and why they are recovering.
Humans are complicated beings, and both danger and charm are found in the human.

Do you have close friends who are Japanese, foreigners, or people from other countries?
Even if you don’t, or even if you have a variety of positions and opinions, and even if you are a strong person or not, I would like you to understand that living in a foreign country and a different environment is challenging.

People shouldn’t be pressured to go against their own will, and if there is a place where people can exchange their opinions and recharge themselves, it will help protect human rights and increase the world’s productivity.
