【What I think about being second in a beauty pageant】Beautiful stories from far away From Japan

2025-03-07 | TOSHI

Beauty pageant have been going downhill lately, but I’m a proponent of them. I am in favor of the beauty pageant because when I was young, I worked very hard and came in second place in a beauty pageant and I am very grateful for that.

Back in the day supermodels were really taking off in pop culture. My height was average for my age, but I was very thin. I tried many things to make the most of my youth, but reality was not so sweet and I had some bad experiences.

Just when I was about to give up, I won 8th place in a certain beauty pageant, that had quite a long and interesting history. I studied hard and practiced for the next year. I ended up winning second place and was able to participate in various other events. However, It was not easy.

At that time, I said to myself, “I gave it my all, and I was recognized for it. I had never done anything like this in my life.”

I felt accomplished from this experience.

A quarter of a century has passed since then, and after I joined a marriage agency in Tokyo, I wrote about my pagent expereinces in my matchmaking profile.

Perhaps that was one of the reasons why I had a relatively high number of blind dates even after I turned 50. Eight months later, I found a partner, we got engaged, and are planning to get married this May.

If I was able to get engaged in part because of that, I am glad that I did my best at that time, even though I had some very unpleasant experiences in other contests.

Maybe the beauty pageant is a violation of lookism and the prejudices people face based on their appearance.

However, the beauty of youth, like a flower in full bloom, is only temporary, and when it falls, the viewer may have forgotten which tree it was.

Also, beauty is a power that often requires consistent effort on its part. Although it might be powerful it is not everything.

If some people excel at it and work hard, it would be better to let it bloom while it can, and that, too, is a form of diversity itself.

Afterall, we may never get a second chance at anything.
