The Movie Solitary Gourmet and Drinking at Noon in Tokyo
Dear followers and readers, I’m TOSHI, a Japanese woman living in Tokyo.
My fiancé and I are big fans of Kodoku no Gourmet. Kodoku no Gourmet (Japanese title: 孤独のグルメ, English title: Solitary Gourmet) is a Japanese cuisine comic series written by Masayuki Kusumi. It has been adapted into a TV show!

Whenever I go to a place I don’t know, I often play Kodoku no Gourmet by adding narration in the style of Goro-chan (the main character, Goro Inogashira) to the scenery and shopping streets of the city.
Since TV TOKYO’s dramas often talk about places in and around Tokyo, I feel like I’m living in the same world as Goro-chan by living here.
So, we were looking forward to Kodoku no Gourmet: The Movie and went to see it in Kinshicho.
Kodoku no Gourmet and the Benefits of Movie Theaters
Kodoku no Gourmet: The Movie is a story about the protagonist, Goro Inogashira, traveling the world in search of the ultimate soup. The film was directed by Yutaka Matsushige, who also stars in the movie.
As a fan of the original manga and the drama series, I was worried about what kind of film it would be and whether or not I’d be disappointed, but it turned out to be very interesting and met my expectations.
It had the feel of the original and the TV show but also took advantage of the larger scale of a movie and its international settings, combining the best of both worlds.
“Goro is Goro wherever he goes.”
Matsushige’s eating is always amazing. I think it must be difficult to act like you’re just eating in silence, but it never gets boring. It feels like the food is the main focus, just as clothes are for a model.
It was a blissful experience to travel the world with my beloved Goro and eat delicious food — the kind that’s unique to Solitary Gourmet, yet still accounts for the the perspective of an ordinary person.
I recommend this film not only to fans of Solitary Gourmet, but also to anyone who wants to experience the magic of a movie theater.
It’s been a while since I last went to the movie theater. However, since most people at the theater were fans, I felt a sense of unity and community when I saw other people buying tickets next to the “friends” who gathered at the cinema, laughing and sharing similar reactions with me.
It can be inconvenient, but watching something you love with other people around you can be a unique experience enjoyed by everyone collectivity.
Since I’ve come all the way to Tokyo, I thought I’d like to go to a theater or a live event too…
Oh, and I forgot to mention — the impressive big screen is also one of the joys of cinemas.
Nowadays, its easy for us to talk behind the screens of our smartphones, but there’s a unique joy of going to a movie theater in person and having a communal experience of watching a film.
Drinking in Kinshicho on the Way Back
“I had such a great time,” I said as we left the movies, but the day wasn’t over just yet.
My fiancé took me to a bar in Kinshicho that’s open in the morning, where almost everything on the menu is 300 yen, around $2 USD.
My fiancé has a job that requires him to work early in the morning sometimes, so he sometimes goes there with his coworkers after work.
Even though it was only 1:30 in the afternoon on a weekday, the place was already full, and people were having a good time.
I sat down in the restaurant without a word, even though I was a woman, which can sometimes be seen as taboo in Japan to do so. However, I felt no judgment there.
“Ah, this is the city… this is Tokyo.”
I was moved. Goro-chan doesn’t drink alcohol, but this world felt close to his.
“There is an angel in Tokyo, an angel called non-interference.”
Simply put, you don’t get judged by strangers of any kind.
But since coming to Tokyo, I hardly drink at all. That’s because my fiancé hardly drinks alcohol himself.
Anyway, on this day, my fiancé was thoughtful enough to take me out, so I was able to drink from noon. I was happy.
