Do you know the movie Black Box Diaries? It is a documentary film about Shiori Ito (伊藤詩織), a Japanese woman and journalist who explores her experience as a sexcual assault survivor.

This film was nominated for the Best Documentary Award at the Academy Awards but has not been released in Japan.

Unfortunately, there are no plans for it to be released in Japan as of right now.

That’s why I haven’t seen it either.

However, I watched the scene where a drunk Ito was pulled out of a taxi by a man at the hotel entrance before she was sexually assaulted. This was actual footage, and it was extremely appalling.

There are mixed opinions about Shiori Ito, but since it is true that she was sexually assaulted, I think this film should be released in Japan as well.

Even if there are mixed opinions, not releasing the film at all goes against the principles of democracy.

I think the fact that “this film has not been released in Japan” can damage Japan’s reputation.

When I look on social media, even after watching the actual scene of the drunk Ms. Ito being dragged out of the taxi, there are still quite a few opinions like, “If she drinks with a man, it means she’s fine with having sex (implying that it’s no surprise that she was sexually assaulted),” and “Her feet are still in the taxi, which means she didn’t resist,” which I found repulsing.

Japan’s gender gap

Did you know about Japan’s gender gap? It’s ranked 118th out of 146 countries, the lowest among the G7, and significantly lower than other developed countries.

Japan has many good sides, but it is a country with severe discrimination against women.

Anywhere in the world, complex tragedies occur when the belief that “this is not a bad thing” is combined with the callous attitude of “I don’t care about their feelings.”

I hope my country will become a better place that is safe for all women, no matter what.
